Teen and Adolescent Counseling

It is the age of transition between childhood and adulthood, when confusion between personal and societal constructs defines the mental state. Physical changes accompanied with emotional tribulations, create an unhealthy mind body relationship. Emotional in-acceptance of changes in the self dynamics, leads to a sense of abandonment and loneliness. Teenage is a space that does not go  through transition in isolation. Friends and family dynamics become an integral part in the adapting to the process, and this makes it imperative for the elders around to not only adjust but to accept the the process of identity formation in the teens. Forcing ideas and ethics is not the right manner to handle the troubles of the teenage. Empathetic listening,  understanding and providing a safe space can be enough to form an appropriate bond with them.

Exam stress and the current educational requirements set immensely exacting precedents to achieve, making it rather difficult for students with different aptitudes to cope with the pressure. With changing school environment and peer pressure, teens now face unfathomable stress. Social problems are not restricted to peers only, any sort of trauma or loss can also cause mental health disturbances. Bullying, relationship problems, loss of a dear person or a pet, parental separation,  emotional or sexual abuse et al, can be a few predisposing triggers to inducing anxiety and depression in teens. It is therefore imperative, to help teens develop a strong sense of self and resilience towards the socio-emotional upheavals of life.

Teen and Adolescent counselling involves traditional talk therapy and counselling methods to improve self-esteem and self-efficacy. Our counsellors focus on developing a comfortable parent-child functioning, in order to improve a caregiver’s ability to relate to the child in a positive, loving manner. Setting limits and encouraging responsible behaviour using techniques of positive discipline.
